David Cortright, peace scholar, teacher and activist, will deliver “How (Not) to Counter Terrorism: Drones and the Strategy of Conflict Prevention” at the upcoming Suarez Lecture Series on March 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gautrelet Room on the campus of Spring Hill College. There is no charge for the event and anyone may attend.

Cortright will discuss the ethical, legal and strategic implications of the use of drone strikes by the United States as an effective means of achieving security. He examines the moral and legal arguments for and against the use of drone weapons and will offer an alternative strategy for countering such methods based on principles of conflict transformation, peace-building and good governance.

Cortright, who is the Director of Policy Studies at Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and serves as Special Advisor for Policy Studies at the Keough School of Global Affairs, has a long history of advocacy for the prevention of war. He is both an established editor and author, with his body of work drawing upon his expertise in nonviolent social change, peace history, nuclear disarmament and international peacemaking. As an active duty solider during the Vietnam War, he spoke against conflict.

The Suarez Lectures are named for Francisco Suárez, SJ, who was a Spanish Jesuit priest regarded during his lifetime as being the greatest living philosopher and theologian and was known for his work in metaphysics, theology and law.
